The essay discuses the two trades by three parts: the best of times, the worst of times and different tales to tell. China's role as the world's largest manufacturing centre along with the status of the US and Europe as the world's leading consumer markets, today means that the Transpacific and the Far East-Europe remain the world's largest single container trades. In recent years they have continued to grow, but at the same time container freight rates on these routes have experienced something of a bumpy ride.
