The Role and Function of Translation in the Thai Literature History——With Modern Literature as Focus

翻译是不同民族之间进行文学交流的必由之路。在外求他种文化时,翻译的地位更加突出。泰国近代文学时期是外求他种文化的典型时期。从微观角度看,翻译是把一种语言的作品转换成另一种语言的创造性劳动。从宏观角度看,翻译的有无决定着泰国近代文学的命运。没有翻译,就没有泰国近代文学,也就没有近代文学的后续发展阶段———现代文学。在泰国这一类型的国家,翻译在其文学发展史上所具有的地位和作用,与中国、印度以及许多西方国家不同。

Translation is an inevitable way of exchange between different nations. It is more important when a nation＇s literature is looking for help from other cultures. The Thai modem literature is a case in point. From the micro point of view, translation is creative effort that transforms a work from a certain language into another. From the macro point of view, however, translation plays a decisive role in the development of the Thai literature. Without translation, there would not have been the Thai modem and contemporary literature. The role and function of translation in the literature history in nations like Thailand, are different form those of China, India and some Western nations.
