The present theories and methods for global stability analysis of frames are summarized and a new method called equivalent axial force is presented. Based on the cross - section edge yield critia of compressing - bending member in elastic stage, it can handle the global stability of frames under the action of axial loads, lateral loads, bending moments, P - A effect and initial flexure etc by the steps of first - order analysis of the frame, the caculation of equival axial force and stability of the ideal frame. Numerical results show that this method is rational and effective.
