The Separation of Urban Areas from the Countryside in the 1950s:Modernization,Resources and Power

城乡隔离是20世纪后半期中国社会经济生活中的重要现象,它的实质就是借助国家政权,依靠行政力量,把城市和乡村这两个本属地域划分的社会部分在制度上固定下来,成为一种具有强制性色彩的制度化的政治、经济和社会二元结构。本文拟对这一问题进行研究,并试图揭示这一历史现象的成因与后果。

The separation of urban areas from the countryside was a conspicuous phenomenon in the Chinese social and economic life in the latter half of the twentieth century. Its essence was to institutionally fix, by means of state power and administrative force, the two social parts of urban areas and the countryside that originally belong to geographical divisions and turn them into an institutionalized political, economic and social binary structure with a strong color of coercion. This paper is purported to study this issue and tries to reveal the causes and consequences of this historical phenomenon.
