Climate change is seriously affecting the way we think and talk about our society. This challenge is facing both landscape architects and landscape architecture schools. New flood management programmes have been the focus for the Master Design Studios at the Institute of Landscape Architecture of the ETH in Zurich in the last three years. The Rhone river delta project, the Lutschine river tract project, and the delta of the Maggia river project all show a topological approach which could easily become complementary to engineering projects while proposing increased public amenity and ecological value. Contemporary schools of landscape architecture are ready to train younger generations of students with the proper methods and tools to meet this challenge. Advanced computer knowledge coupled with the acquirement of appropriate topological abilities in grading and in drainage is a must if landscape architecture is to remain competitive with other fields in environmental design.
