乔治·萧伯纳（George Bernard Shaw,1856--1950），英国剧作家、批评家和小说家。1925年获得诺贝尔文学奖。1933年曾访问中国并会晤了宋庆龄、鲁迅。著作有《鳏天的房地产》（1885--1892）、《华伦夫人的职业》（1894）、《恺撒和克莉奥佩特拉》（1898）和《人与超人》（1903）等。 萧伯纳的作品习惯以似是而非的论点来揭露人类社会的各种弊端，本文也是一样。文章用形象的事例，犀利而幽默的语言：揭示了百万富翁生活中的异化现象，颇为发人深省。
