This thesis conducts a survey of the reception of John Donne in the west and China. The reception of Donne in the west has undergone a glorious period in the 17^th century, a hibernation period in the 18^th, a resuscitation period in the 19^th and a fanatical period in the 20^th century; Donne＇s reception in China has undergone a beginning period in 1980s, a developing period in 1990s and a continual developing period at the beginning of the 21st century. Donne＇s poetry has aroused repeated reading and extremely contradictory opinions, which reflects the distinctiveness and complexity of Donne＇s poetry and is worthy of our attention and thought.
