Inheritance and Innovation: the Report of Newman's The Ideals of the University

纽曼《大学的理想》认为,大学是传授普遍知识的地方,大学就是通过自由教育的途径造就绅士,同时自由教育与职业教育并不矛盾与冲突。但是纽曼《大学的理想》仍带有个人和时代的局限性,他没有看到科研与教学相互促进的积极作用,因此,从经典中继承与超越是我国大学固本强基的必由之路。

Newman＇s The Ideals of the University is a profound and far-reaching educational work which has a broad impact on the world higher education. Yet, Newman＇s passion and logical eloquence couldn＇t save the fate of the traditional idea of British universities. But this does not mean that Newman＇s idea of the University was worthless, instead, his idea of a university has been benefiting future generations. Hence, for the classics, we will not only inherit its essence, but exceed its limitations as well.
