γ FeOOH crystals were grown from FeSO 4 by the air oxidation of ferrous hydroxide suspension in the presence of EDTA, and then 100% spindle α Fe 2O 3 particles were prepared by adding 0 0025 mol/L hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) at 90￣95℃. The mean particle length is 150￣180 nm and the axial ratio is 3 5￣3 8. A series of experiments were carried out with HEDP concentrations ranging from 0 0015 to 0 003 mol/L. The effect of HEDP concentration on α Fe 2O 3 morphology is discussed.
