The item difficulty control is one of the main content and kernel problems in item development work of higher education self-taught examination. The paper discussed the significance, requirement, basic measures and technique of item difficulty control in self-taught examination. Especially, the paper pointed out the illogicality of the difficulty arrangement in self-taught examination outline, and the corresponding suggestion of adjustment is provided. From the angle of the quality management process in the tem development, the measurements on how to control item difficulty are showed. Finally, with some practical examples, the item difficulty control technologies and ways in the item development of education examination are illustrated.
