Tragedy and comedy are two different genres of literature. In Catch-22, however, through brilliant characterizations, superb irony, mind-boggling paradoxes, and ingenious absurdity, Joseph Heller succeeds in interlaying humor and terror, comedy and tragedy into a beautiful whole, and reveals in the process that war is inhumane and cruel.
