Ritual Activities of a Provincial Noble Family in the Late Half of Chosun Dynasty Era

通过论述朝鲜时代安义地区草溪郑氏一个门中书院的礼仪规范及形式,并分析它所反映出的社会机能,体现礼仪所具有的政治及社会性含义,以及通过书院、斋舍的祭祀活动,可以构筑出新的共同体文化的特点。特别是在传统朝鲜社会如何运用书院、斋舍、精舍等多样的形式和礼仪祭祀内容,来确保自身家门的正体性和政治的正当性。

The Seowon （书院）and its rituals in the Chosun Dynasty era had very unique educational and religious functions. This paper focuses on the family of Chogye Jeong - ssi （草溪郑氏） in the Anui （安养） region. By examining the records, mainly ancient documents, it defines the construction of Seowon and Jaesa （斋舍）by noble men and their Jasa （祭祀）rituals, which performed the function of securing the family＇s identity and political validity. Taking control of Jesa signified the monopolization of the ethical authority of Confucianism and leaded to strengthening the family＇s hegemony in the community. The Seowon rituals clearly reflected the rise and fall, and the course of the events of noble families in village communities in the late half of the Chosun Dynasty era.
