Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) provides temporary extracorporeal life support for patients with severe respiratory or cardiac failure. During ECMO, patients receive minimal respiratory support while the lungs are bypassed and allowed to heal. ECMO therapy helps to reduce the barotrauma and oxygen toxicity in conventional mechanical ventilation. This technology has become safer and more efficient but complications may still occur, including mechanical complications in the extracorporeal circuit itself and clinical status of a patient. The longer the duration of ECMO,the more complications will occur. ECMO should become a new treatment in these patients with fulminant respiratory failure.
