A Rose for Emily is one of the greatest short stories of William Faulkner. Although the title of this short story is "A Rose for Emily", there is no mention of rose in the whole story. The mysterious tide seems to conceal the Faulkner' s profound meaning. By using such a self- subversion, or self- consent way,Faulkner leaves suspense for people to decode. Therefore, the symbolic meaning of rose is the key to understand the whole story. This paper aims to decode the connotations of rose from the historical and social elements like the putitan culture and the difference between the South and the North.
