As one of the first to make contact with China, the Portuguese have formed different images of China in different periods in history. Among them, the well-known 19^th century writer Eca de Queiroz wrote some interesting works. Base on Said's theory of Orientalism, this essay attempts to analyse two different images of China depicted by Eca de Queiroz in his Mandarin and Chinese and Japanese. On the one hand, Eca de Queiroz joined the choir of disapproval of China in the western world of his time; on the other hand, he used China as "a Persian letter" to criticize his own country.
