Co-sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Chinese Musicians' Association and the Municipal Government of Guangzhou, and presented by the Publicity Department of CPC Guangzhou Committee, the Cultural Bureau of Guangzhou and the Guangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the 6th China ″Golden Bell″Awards for Music took place from December 13 to 20, 2007 in Guangzhou. This edition of the competitions for the ″Golden Bell″Awards was held under the inspiration of the great strategic mission put forward by the Party at its 17th National Congress that had just concluded with great success in Beijing, a mission aimed at ″bringing about a new upsurge in socialist cultural development and promoting vigorous development and prosperity of socialist culture in all aspects″. The leadership of the Guangzhou City sees the project of the Golden Bell Awards as an important measure to carry forward the spirit of the Party's 17th National Congress, promote the development of Chinese music cause, and strengthen the ″soft power″of the city. Under close cooperation with the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Chinese Musicians' Association, the Municipal Party Committee and Government have worked with the co - organizers in highly effective ways, bringing the Golden Bell into a new phase of rapid development. This year's Golden Bell Awards were made possible two years later after the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department launched a movement of rectification and readjustment on all nation- wide prizes and awards in 2005. The Golden Bell awards take place every two years since then. However, during this movement, the Golden Bell was luckily further strengthened and even enlarged in the setup of categories. In this present edition, the awards for theory and criticism, and those for chorus and pop music were added, and also there were three preliminary contest cities of Changsha, Nanjing and Ningbo in which the competitions of chorus, folk music and pop music were held respectively. Under the guidance of the Organizing Committee and with the efforts of all the staff, the Golden Bell awards in performance category went to 83 winners, and the awards in composition category went to 15 winners, those in theory and criticism to 26 winners, and the Lifelong Achievement Awards to eight winners. Leaders at various levels from the Ministry of Culture, the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Chinese Musicians' Association, the CPC Guangzhou Committee and the Municipal Government of Guangzhou paid great attention to the awards, and wrote congratulatory inscriptions for the event. The city of Guangzhou has been trying to build up a ″famous city of music″by nourishing the city's distinctive cultural identity, and in particular, by applying the medium of the Golden Bell Awards in achieving the objective of ″making the sound of the nation, acelebration of music and a festival of the people.″ The various offices of the Organizing Committee had already started planning and preparations since early 2007. Detailed work schemes, which had been made based on the experiences of the past editions, provided concrete measures and mechanisms to ensure the success of the whole event. The prize - giving ceremony in Guangzhou saw not only the winners of the awards for piano, violin, voice (bel canto) and voice (Chinese singing), the four key disciplines to be permanently kept for Guangzhou, and awards for composition, theory and criticism as well as lifelong achievement, but also the gold prize winners for chorus, Chinese instrumental music (Erhu and Guzheng) and pop music from the three contest venues of Changsha, Nanjing and Ningbo. All these awards were granted to the winners in Guangzhou on the same occasion, which highlights the core position of Guangzhou as the major contest area. Elaborate organization work and thorough arrangements were made in the following aspects: work meetings of the Organizing Committee convened in due timeM organization work for all the competitionsM ticketing service for the concert performancesM reception work for all the quests and observersMand security work in all venues. The city of Guangzhou provided first- class facilities and high - quality service for the event. The local government attached great importance to the reception work, and convened a city- wide mobilization conference to encourage all the related parties to serve the Golden Bell. In order to have more attention from the citizens, the Organizing Committee again invited local citizen families to receive contestants. Finally, 19 families were selected to receive 19 contestants. A series of supporting activities were organized in Guangzhou to create a festive atmosphere for the Golden Bell Awards, such as welcome receptions, opening and closing concert, public forum, music lectures, mass music performances and contests, etc. The Organizing Committee also strengthened its publicity program by adopting the same set of effective publicity measures used for the past editions, and by investing more on publicity resources. A series of publicity events were implemented so as to further upgrade the brand value of the Golden Bell and magnify its social influence. Meanwhile, with the growing influence of the Awards, great attention was paid to the event by various sectors of the society. The Organizing Committee, while sticking to the principle of the government dominating, was also active in seeking effective means to have participation from business enterprises and operation in market ways. ″The sound of the Golden Bell echoes in Guangzhou with great music reaching to all the corners.″In this new era, the China Golden Bell Awards for Music will see more space for development and more opportunities for growing up. The city of Guangzhou will continue to attach great importance to the Golden Bell and further its efforts to perfect the organization work in order to make greater contribution to promote the vigorous development and prosperity of advanced socialist culture.
