Research findings show that game-playing can be used in education to enrich the learning environment, making learning a fun experience. Students who learn by doing are more skilled at problem-solving, collaborative learning and the like.Learning Villages (LV) are virtual game-based learning communities where social interaction, game-playing and learning activities are harmoniously integrated. What are students' behaviors like and how do they perceive LV? Does LV improve student's learning? To address these research questions, a study was conducted on 271 students from 3 secondary schools in Hong Kong. Qualitative and quantitative instruments were employed to collect data. It was found in the study that students in LV were able to obtain information from different angles as well as through diverse channels and to adopt a flexible approach to solving problems. Nevertheless, there was no significant improvement in deep processing strategies, metacognitive strategies and collaborative strategies. Moreover, feedback from the students indicates that the scenarios should be more realistic with more independent and collaborative learning activities as well as more critical voices. Overall, the students' behaviours in LV were game-oriented in most cases.
