Poetry of Afaa Michael Weaver, one of the most important contemporary American poets,is distinguished from the passionate style of 'I protest' that marked the Harlem Renaissance. This distinction may be the defining feature of a new generation of African American poets, who have shifted their attention from powerful political proclamation to a profound experience of everyday life.Although the style of Weaver seems to be old-fashioned,the flow of his sentences,well-calculated and carefully-constructed,is able to reenact the life of African Americans based on his observation with much subtlety and incisiveness.Weaver's remarkable ability to command his theme and tone resembles that of Gwendolyn Brooks, one of his predecessors. Both poets are able to employ techniques in service of conveying deep emotions. In this light,in my reading of his poems, instead of paying attention to his African American identity or the African American poetics stressed by Weaver himself,I emphasize his special devotion to native character and personal spirit.
