Sue in Jude the Obscure is a new woman drifting away from the moral standards of the Victorian Age. By leaving her family and escaping from the marriage, she breaks through the traditional female "private space" and enters into the male "public space". However, Thomas Hardy depicts the new woman incarnating the progress of the age as a mentally imbalanced woman and arranges for her a tragic fate of spiritual collapse. The creation of Sue' s image is related to the male author's psychology of anxiety. This paper analyzes Sue's distorted image from the perspective of the author's anxiety.
