Frame semantics:The third phase of Case Grammar

框架语义学是格语法理论的系统化、具体化,是格语法发展的第三个阶段。框架语义学解决了格语法中存在的问题,把研究的重点转向了对概念结构和语义—句法映射关系的描写。尽管格语法和框架语义学都是对语言共性的研究,但就方法论而言,Fillmore从心智主义转向了经验主义。文章指出了框架语义学存在的两个主要问题及解决的办法。

Frame semantics is a further development of case grammar, and can be regarded as its third phase. Case Grammar had been criticized for its difficulty in determining semantic roles, the violation by some syntactic constituents against 'saliency hierarchy', and the imbalanced attention paid to different syntactic constituents in sentence generation. Frame semantics can solve these problems, and has changed its focus onto conceptual structures and semantic-syntactic mappings, which combine frame elements, phrase types and grammatical functions. Although case grammar and frame semantics are both concerned with universal properties of languages, Fillmore has changed his language philosophy from mentalism to empiricism. The paper points out two major problems in frame semantics and suggests some possible solutions.
