The international geosphere biosphere program (IGBP) is one of the most important activities in the field of geoscience. Its core project “past global change (PAGES)” aims to reconstruct the environmental history in the past and the PANASH program represents the focal task of PAGES. The most important objective of PANASH is to establish the sequences of past climate changes and to determine the phase relationships of different localities of the two hemispheres through the study along three pole equator pole transects (PEPs). In this paper, the major objectives and scientific questions of the three PEP projects are presented and some common scientific interests are analyzed. The Chinese territory represents a highly important part of the PEP Ⅱtransect and the research activities in our country are crucial to the whole PEP Ⅱ project.
