Important Achievements in the Exca- vation of the Liao Dynasty Zuling Mausoleum in Bairin Left Banner,Inner Mon- golia

祖陵是辽代第一个皇帝耶律阿保机及其皇后的陵寝之地，建于天显二年（公元927年）。祖陵位于内蒙古巴林左旗查干哈达苏木石房子嘎查西北的山谷中，东南约2．5公里处为其奉陵邑祖州城。祖陵坐落于一个口袋形山谷中，四面环山，仅在临近祖州的东南方向有一狭窄的山口，现存陵门基址。中国社会科学院考古研究所内蒙古第二工作队和内蒙古文物考古研究所联合组成考古队，

The Zuling is the tomb of Yelü Abaoji, the first emperor of the Liao Dynasty, and his wife. It was built in the second year of Tianxian reign （AD 927） and is located at Chaganhada Sum in Bairin Left Banner, Inner Mongolia, in a mountain valley northwest of Shifangzi Gacha, about 2.5 km to the northwest of its guarding town Zuzhou City. Its excavation here reported revealed Funeral Burial No.1 and building foundations on Tortoise-pedestal Hill, and brought to light numbers of character bearing fragments of steles. This is the first scientific excavation of the mausoleum. The findings evidenced the literal record on the location of the tomb for the first time in archaeology and advanced archaeological research on the mausoleum building institution in the Liao period. The remains of an identified stele among the stone fragments enrich the contents of the History of the Liao and have high historiographic significance, and the bilingual stele inscriptions have important reference value to the decipherment of greater and lesser Khitan scripts.
