Based on oracle-bone inscriptions unearthed from Locus East of Huayuanzhuang and those previously discovered on the Yin Ruins, the present paper points out that the character "ci 朿" in oracle-bone inscriptions, in addition to the usual meaning "kill with a pointed weapon," is used to mean the buildings of ancestral temples. For example, the words "Fu ci 凫朿" and "Xin ci 新朿" refer to this type of building at the places Fu and Xin; and some oracular inscriptions were for divination whether it would be appropriate to hold "yi ji 宜祭" (sacrifice to God of Earth and consult him about going on a journey or taking other important actions) or "gao ji 告祭" (sacrifice to ancestors or divinities and consult them about one's various intentions) in the ancestral temple buildings of certain places. In these cases "ci 朿" could be written as with the added component emphasizing the meaning "building." In Group Bin of oracular inscriptions, the phrase "begged from Xin ci" occurs quite frequently, which means that part of the oracle ox-scapulas were got from a certain place's ancestral temple building where ox victims had been slaughtered for sacrifice.
