This paper focuses on the obsession of Lin Yutang after his literature transform with indiviualism and his inextricable spriritual dilemma, his juxtaposition of persistence and escape and his mode of thinking which betrays the tranritory and illusory nature of the individual entity advocated by contemporary intellectuals they living in the pervading tradition bound at mosphere weighed down with worry over the desting of the state and sympathy for the plight of the people, are nevertheless in the firm grip of modernity＇ s consiousness of the ever pressing time.
