Wang Qiansong is in his 80s. His hometown is Haining in Zhejiang Province. He is among the few living artists who can perform the entire repertoire of piyingxi, or shadow puppet theater. Since early 1990s, Wang has been working on an ambitious project with the help of seven other local artists to revive this age-old art form. The eight artists, all in their 70s and 80s, set up a troupe called Langjiaban and tour from village to village, and city to city. Over the past few years, the troupe has enjoyed increasing popularity among local audiences and has been frequently invited to perform in large cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. The elderly artists have also taken their act abroad, introducing the ancient art form to Western audiences.
