周代是一个男尊女卑的社会,妇女的地位总体来说低于男子。这主要由她们在社会和家庭中所扮演的角色所决定,同时也反映在一些礼仪仪式中。在婚礼中周代的妇女在婚姻自主权、人格、财产等方面基本没有主动权。在丧祭仪式中女子往往处于配祭和从属的地位,所服丧服男女也有严格的等级区别,服丧期限也明显不同。
