A Study on the Love Tragedy of Female Intellectuals in Republican China(1920s-1940s)

20世纪20—40年代,随着恋爱观念广泛传播,恋爱悲剧也逐渐增多。很多知识女性接受了"灵肉一致"的恋爱观,与男子结交、恋爱,甚至发生非婚性关系;但她们却又无法彻底摆脱旧式贞操观念的束缚,一旦与男友分手或发现被骗婚,就会郁郁终生甚至自杀以谢罪。恋爱悲剧的发生,体现出恋爱自由观念对于现实生活之影响的复杂形态。

With the popularization of the idea of free love in China, love tragedies saw a steady increase during 1920s and 1940s. Many female intelleetuals accepted the conception of ＂eongruity of mettle and flesh＂ （ling rou yi zhi） and indulged in romantic or even extramarital sexual relationship, yet they couldn＇t thoroughly get rid of the traditional bondage of sexual commitment. So, once there was a breakup with their former boyfriends or suspicion of sexual deception, they were gripped by a depressive melancholy and committed suicide, love tragedies of this type is a reflection of the complex impact of free love on the daily life of this generation.
