When we were asked to place 75 suites of studios for artists in a square land of 108m × 108m with height (imitation of 15m, the only solution that we could think of is gathering together. What' s interesting is that, this is just the living state of Chinese artists. Artists all like to gather together, because, being together, they can unbosom themsleves to each other, and form a circle of themselves. Different from the several existent artists circles in Beijing, including 798 plant, Caochangdi east district of art, Beigao art district, this artist community project is not something spontaneous, but bears some color of planning. The project embraces the long, deep-rooted and exceptionally advantaged geographic and cultural history of western Beijing, and it is intended to be a construction group of private studios of mature artists mainly engaged in mainstream art. These considerations got us to realize that, to get a good understanding of the working state of the artists, and have it reflected on the spaces and places using appopriate architectural language, will be the key to the success of the project.
