On the Literal Phonology of Suzhou Dialect in the Mid-19th Century in Words in the Dialect 《乡音字类》

文章通过与1935年陆基《苏州同音常用字汇》的比较,归纳了十九世纪中叶苏州方言字书《乡音字类》的语音系统,发现《乡音字类》中还有声母[d(?)]与[(?)]的对立,声调还保留四声八调的特点,但部分全浊上声已归阳去;通过和《苏州同音常用字汇》所记录的文白两读现象的比较,确认了《乡音字类》所反映的是十九世纪中叶苏州话的读书音系统。

Based on a comparison with LU Ji＇s 陆基 A Collection of Frequently Used Homonyms in Suzhou Dialect 《苏州同音常用字汇》in 1935, the paper sums up the phonology of Suzhou dialect in LU Maoxiu＇s 陆懋修 Words in the Dialect 《乡音字类》 in 1877. The conclusions are： initial consonants [ ] remained different from[ ], it had eight tone categories, and Shangshen with voiced initial became Yangqu. The author argues that Words in the Dialect 《乡音字类》 reflected the literal phonology of Suzhou dialect in the mid-19th century. s
