Henry Philip Tappan is famous American higher educational reformer during the Mid - 19th century. He was deeply influenced by German universities＇ patterns and formed the ideas on encyclopedic university. He thought the university should have both connotations and scales. His ideas made a significant impact on the future development of the University of Michigan and American research university of the 19th century.
