American feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman has, in her short story The Yellow Wallpaper, made a significant breakthrough in former female writers' narrative tradition about mad women. Compared with the former female writers, she highlights rather than marginalize the mad women in her text; she focuses on the process in which a woman is driven mad instead of the mere result; rather than elaborating the grand death of the mad women, she endeavors to depict their tough life; she does not deny but endow them with discourse power. The breakthrough of hers distinctly displays her writing style as a feminist writer.
