Last October, a new stretch of Great Wall quietly appeared in the Tianmo desert, two hours west of Beijing. So did a 1940s-era Japanese encampment, a 50-foot high warrior head bearing a strange resemblance to Jet Li, a whole lot of slightly frazzled people, and one American director - feeling very irate that a villager had chosen to herd his flock of goats straight through the center of set.
