从20世纪50年代起，租赁在美国的各行各业中就被广泛应用，得到很大的发展，是世界上最早开发和功能最全的租赁市场。美国的租赁是从个体店开始的，也就是从夫妻店开始运行的。在租赁初期阶段整个行业处于比较混乱的局面，没有统一的经营标准，没有相关的配套体系，其发展也是经历了一个由不成熟走向成熟的过程。
