The Yu Lan Peng Festival is a big traditional festival in Japan, second only to the New Year' s Day. This festival started in the so-called Flying Bird Period, and its main activity has changed from almsgiving to forefather worship offering. This belief is in fact a product of the Sino-Japanese cultural communications, divided into the three parts of meeting, worshipping and making a farewell to forefather. For over 1000 years the idea of worshipping forefather through the Yu Lan Peng Festival has influenced the Japanese people. Thus, the festival can be regarded as a mirror of the Japanese mentality and a guide for Sino -Japanese cultural exchanges.
