In order to transfer the powdery mildew resistance gene of Triticum araraticum to common wheat, T.araraticum was crossed with common wheat cultivars,and the resulting F 1 plants were selfcrossed or backcrossed to the wheat cultivars.All plants of F 1 hybrids and some of F 2 and F 3 progenies were identified to be resistant to powdery mildew.The cytological analysis showed that less than 7 pairs of bivalents per PMC at metaphase I of F 1 hybrids were observed and C banding showed that the bivalents consisted of A u and A b chromosomes. Trivalents,tetravalents and a few pentavalents were also observed in PMCs.More than 90 percent of somatic cells in the F 3 progeny had 42 chromosomes,some of which obtained the chromosomes from T.araraticum .
