译者处理文化信息时一般采用异化手段或归化手段。《儒林外史》英译本的译者在翻译其中的习语、礼仪习俗和思维方式等时尽量采取异化手段,辅以必要的归化手段,保留和传达了源语的文化信息,从而让译入语读者获取异域文化知识、领略原著之美,达到了传递文化信息这一翻译的根本目的。

There are two ways in dealing with the transmission of cultural information： foreignization and domestication. On the translation of cultural information in idiomatic phrases, etiquettes and ways of thinking in The Scholars, the translators applied foreignization accompanied by domestication. Thus, readers of the target language can learn and understand better the culture, theme and beauty of the original work, and the cultural information is transmitted by means of translation.
