摘要
加尔文教赋予霍桑一种伟大的黑暗力量,它构成一种否定性的知识体系,在包括《红字》在内的前期创作中,他将之纳入以清教历史为题材的作品中,同时,结合假面具等民间节庆元素,探讨了否定性知识对清教信仰体系构成的直接挑战。本文在分析霍桑有代表性作品的基础上,力图较为系统地考察其创作前期的宗教思想。
Hawthorne's great power of blackness grows out of his familiarity with Calvinism and it develops in him a tragic vision which threatens to challenge and negate the puritan system of beliefs. Based on a close reading of The Scarlet Letter and several of his stories, this paper is intended to shed light on his early religious thoughts.
