A New Exploration of the Tragic Fate of Fox in Tang Novels

狐意象自进入文学视野以来,一直是为人们所喜爱、所敬畏的。然自有唐一代,狐之形象却发生重大转变。究其原因,则为唐人对"胡"存在偏见,因"狐"与"胡"有诸多相通之处,则借"狐"以表现,这与唐人"有意为小说"是密不可分的。

Since the image of fox comes into literature, it has aroused passions of both adores and awesome. However, since Tang Dynasty the image and significance of fox have changed dramatically. The reason is that people in Tang Dynasty had a prejudice against ＂Hu＂ people, a northern minority barbarian. While in Chinese language the character of ＂fox＂ also pronounced ＂ Hu＂ , and there were some characteristic similarity between barbarian ＂Hu＂ and the fox ＂Hu＂, so they use fox to indicate ＂Hu＂ people. This is also closely related to Tang authors＂ consciousness of intended fiction or novel creating.
