By analyzing archaeological data and literal records through the historico-geographical approach, the present paper comes to the conclusion that the Shang people's eastward expanse started from the upper Erligang Culture period brought about confrontation between the Shang and the Dongyi cultures in the Shandong region. The variety of geographical conditions in the eastern land exerted a significant influence upon the Shang's dominating way in different areas. The eastward expanse of the Shang people changed the geographical distribution, political structure, economic life and culture of the Dongyi ethnic group and led to the first differentiation of the Dongyi' s internal system. This situation along with the Zhou people's eastward expedition in the Western Zhou period finally resulted in the fundamental change of the political structure in the region of the eastern ethnic groups, i.e. the separation of the Huaiyi from the Dongyi.
