The jiaodou is a type of vessel frequently seen in tombs of the Han to the Tang periods. There are bronze, iron, pottery and porcelain products. A comprehensive study of the examples known so far suggests that they can be divided into four categories, which show clear evolutionary lines in form, distinct regionalism in distribution and a certain law in alteration. The bronze jiaodou must have been originated in the Han period, prevailed in the Six Dynasties age and tended to vanish in the Tang period. According to its changing law in form and distribution and its function in the combination of funeral objects and in the light of the developmental course of tea drinking custom in China, it can be inferred that the bronze jiaodou must have been a tea boiling vessel.
