《战争和人》是王火对亲历过的抗战生活进行了长达40年的沉淀和反刍后才创作出来的鸿篇巨制。作品通过童霜威这个国民党的中间派,在抗战期间终于转变为国民党的左派的坎坷人生道路和艰难思想历程,形象地说明残暴的日本侵略者必然失败,腐朽的国民党政权必然崩溃,崭新的人民共和国必然诞生的历史发展趋势。作品由于既深入地挖掘了人物转变的内因,又全面地表现了人物转变的外因,还充分地展示了人物转变的过程,也即历史地描写出人物的具体人性,因而成功地塑造了童霜威"这一个"人们"熟悉的陌生人"。

War and Man is a great work written by Wang Huo after his forty-year rumination over his personal experience of life during the Anti-Japanese War. Through Tone Shuangwei＇s rugged life course and hard thought process from a middle-roader to a leftist of the Kuomingtang （KMT） during the period of the Resistance War against Japanese, this novel vividly illustrated the historical developing trend that cruel Japanese invaders were doomed to failure, the corrupted Kuomingtang government was bound to collapse, and a new people＇s republic would emerge. Because of the novel＇s deep exploration of the internal and external causes of personality transformation, as well as its full presentation of the process of personality transformation, that is, historically describing concrete humanization, a ＂familiar stranger＂ Tong Shuangwei was successfully shaped in this novel.
