As a famous poet of post-symbolism, T· S· Eliot inherits the pre-symbolisln's tradition. On the one hand, he dose not prefer to express emotion directly as the romanticists do. On the other hand, he does not like the realism and naturalism's way to exactly represent the objective world. This article is focusing on the discussion of the sub-consciousness condensed into the symbol of mennaid in Eliot's poem The Love Song of J·Alfred.Prufrock. The new meaning of mermaid's symbol reflects the spiritual disillusion of modem men.
