Catastrophic theory is an new thinking method,which can deal with nonlinear and discontinuity without taking inner mechanism into consideration,and especially fit for engineering mining with complicated systems and unsure initial condition.In this article,the basic principle about catastrophic and elementary catastrophic models is expounded in detail,And the related formulas of cusp catastrophic mode are deduced.At the end,the cusp catastrophic mode is used to forecast water inrush from coal floor and to analyze surrounding rocks＇ instability in deep laneway.
