Facing a dilemma——the middle man image in Zhang Tian-yi's fiction The Freak Diary

在短篇小说《畸人手记》中,张天翼用辛辣的笔法刻画了一个知识分子如何在新旧两派势力夹击之下,变为"中间人"的过程。以这个性格复杂的人物形象为中心,小说还探讨了新文学幼稚病、国民性等问题,对现代人的生存困境也作了一定反思。

Zhang Tian-yi illustrated the embarrassment of intellectual who was forced to become a middle man in the struggle between the old forces and new ones in his short fiction The Freak Diary. Around this middle man image, the author also explores the problems of infantilism of Chinese new literature and nationality issue. The author at last makes introspection on survival dilemma of modern people.
