Understatement is a common linguistic phenomenon. The speaker intentionally attenuates the real state of affairs, and thus achieves various pragmatic functions. Different linguistic theories illustrate the motivation of its production. The paper attempts to explore understatement production under the framework of relevance theory, and concludes that understatement is a loose talk, an interpretation of the speaker＇s complex thought. The speaker aims at optimal relevance in producing understatement.
