It is likely that the 2010 Shanghai Expo will draw a large amount of visitors from all over the world, thus will bring a significant pressure on the city's transportation facilities. This paper studies the travel and recreational behaviors of Expo visitors by analyzing their basic characteristics based on data from Shanghai and other former host cities. From a traveler's standpoint, the Expo transportation service area can be divided into 4 circular sub-areas according to the prevailing limits of different travel modes. Meanwhile, from a recreational perspective, trips can be made for single purpose or multi-purposes, which result in different recreational behaviors and travel routes. Furthermore, travel activities should be integrated with recreational behaviors, and more importantly, accommodated properly by every aspects of public transportation. Finally, the paper suggests reducing ticket price of recreational tunnels crossing the Huangpu River, and turning waterbuses into floating Expo showrooms, etc.
