Maori gardens in the pre-European period, with native crops and horticultural plants, were used only for food. The first ornamental garden in New Zealand was established in 1814, by European missioners after their settlement. In the first wave of immigration from 1840s to 1860s, European settlers developed a number of public gardens over this heavenly land. Christchurch became New Zealand’s first city in 1856 by Royal Charter and has established 792 parks in the past 150 years. In 1997, Christchurch won the title of “Garden City of the World”. Christchurch is known by not only her thousands of modern public and private gardens, but also the unique beauty of her Kiwi-English style historic gardens. The stories of several prominent historic public gardens were reviewed and the landscapes of these Christchurch heritages were glanced.
