In A Room With a View,Foster depicts a series of characters with 'undeveloped hearts'.The heroine Lucy is bounded by traditional concepts.She wants to emancipate herself from conventions but she doesn't have enough courage and confidence;Cecil loses his energy and passion as a human for his sticking to old rules and concepts and Mr.Eager manifests his arrogance,hypocrisy and cruelty by slandering the old Emerson.Through these typical characters,Foster criticizes the typical English character,by which he shows his responsibility as an intellectual.
