Electro-spark deposition (ESD) is a pulsed-arc micro-welding process, using short duration, high-current electrical pulses to deposit a consumable electrode material onto a metallic substrate. Micro-volumes of electrode materials are deposit in the arc plasma of a pulsed current and fused into the substrate surface and solidified rapidly forming a metallurgical bond. Electro-Spark Deposition can be used to repair a damaged area and perform surface enhancement as a coating. Most major repairs can be carried out on site in a very short time. The ESD coatings are particularly suitable in severe environments involving high stresses, high temperature, wear, corrosion and erosion. The principles, advantages, drawbacks and research projects of the ESD process are described in detail.
