Objective To explore a more economical and effective method to prevent needle stabs. Methods Eight hundred cases were divided into two groups randomly: the control group(n=400) and observational group (n=400). The infusion was done by 10 nurses. The needles in the control group were fixed by the conventional adhesive plaster, while those in the observation group were fixed with the sponge adhesive plaster and the needle was plunged into the sponge immediately after it was withdrawn. The injury rate of the two groups by the needle, the working efficiency and the psychological response of nurses were observed. Results All the patients were not found to have discomfort or local reaction. In the control group all nurses reported fear when they withdrew the needle, and there was only one in the observation group reporting the feeling, In the observation group, the injury rate by the needle was significantly decreased (P〈0. 01), and the time to withdraw and handle the needle was shortened significanly as compared with the control group (P〈0.01). Conclusion In the process of infusion, using the sponger adhesive plaster was a kind of effective and safe method, which can prevent the needle puncture and was good to the health of the nurse staff.
